Riddles generally are of two types. One is regarded as conundra and the other enigmas. Riddles described as conundra are usually questions that rely on their effects on the punning they produce either in the question or in the answer.
Enigma riddles are generally problems that are allegorical or metaphorical in expression and usually require careful thinking and ingenuity for it to be solved. Riddles are designed to be brain teasers and for fun.
Therefore, a good riddle should be able to test your smarts, should have an answer, should be fun, and entertaining.
In centuries past, especially in African cultures, riddles were often used to pass a message to communities from the deity, pass secret information around within families, and used it as a gate pass from one community to another.
